The focus of the present edition of The Studies in Foreign Language Education (Volume 16) is a historical and critical reflection, which allows us to portray the history of individual departments focused on language teaching for non-philological as well as philological disciplines, along with overlaps into the present or the future. For this very reason, most of the authors dealt primarily with the history of language teaching departments. Specifically, these included the circumstances of the establishment of the department, its organisational structure and members; the languages taught and the programmes of study within which the languages were taught and their characteristics; organisation of teaching; statistics in relation to teaching; methodological approaches in teaching; the content of the courses; language examinations; and cooperation with foreign countries.
